Often times we can get in a frump when writing a story or a book. As Christians we have Holy Spirit to help us get out of a frump or writer’s block. Sometimes Holy Spirit will use questions to help refocus our perspective for writing to get us looking in a new direction for those hidden words we are looking for. Jesus did this when He talked with people. It was a custom the rabbis did in those times to now. It was a way of teaching. Ask another question instead of answering the original question. Here are some questions to help with your perspective to keep writing the book the Lord put on your heart.
Who are you writing this book for? Who is your audience? What will your audience benefit from reading your book? How will your audience feel? How do you feel when writing the book? Are you sharing these feelings in the book? Why did you write the book to start with? How can you change your perspective to enjoy the processes? What can you focus on instead? What can you be thankful for about writing the book and/or drawing the pictures? Do you need some help from others to write/draw your book? Do you need to hire someone or invite friends or family to help?
Who are the characters in your story? What are their personalities? Who are the characters suppose to represent? What age are the characters? What journey is each character suppose to go on, and what are they to learn? What is the background of each character? What destinations are the characters heading to? What is the background or the setting for the story? What type of genre is the book – Fictional, Historical, Adventure? What is the theme of your book? What is the most important lesson, perspective, or understanding you want the readers to get out of the book? Sometimes thinking of the final look of the book can inspire what direction or how deep into the story you want to go with the book, and what type of information you want to share in the book. How many pages or how thick do you want the book to be? Do you want paperback or hardback? What do you want your final book to look like?
Most importantly, remember to take time with Holy Spirit each day before you sit down to write or draw; and ask Holy Spirit to help you write the right words, express the right perspective or meaning, and to help you draw the illustrations that will best explain and express the passage it is for. I also add in my prayers for Him to MOVE ME to do these things as well because the Lord is always helping us, but sometimes we need a good push to do something, or extra guidance of our hand to properly create something. Teamwork with the Lord is great!
