โFor God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.โ 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)
2 Timothy 1:7 is one of my main go-to swords of the Word of God. (Ephesians 6:17 says the Word of God or our Bible is our sword.) When I was a little girl, about 2 years old and up, I would get horrible nightmares. I would wake up screaming bloody murder. My mama began to have me to repeat this scripture verse over and over after her until I felt better and could go back to sleep. Pretty soon I didn’t need to repeat the verse after my mama. I knew it by heart, and I immediately prayed it myself. I had learned that the Word of God โ the Holy Bible, is powerful and brings victory quickly.
God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. Through the 30 plus years of my life, the Lord has shown me how this verse is more than the original intent my mama had when she shared it with me to fight off scary dreams. He showed me that He has given me a sound mind. I have a clear, focused, at peace mind when there is chaos, confusion, overwhelming emotions, and so many other unsettling circumstances that I find myself in. I have a sound mind.
He showed me that I have power. I have the power through Holy Spirit to tell that mountain of a problem to move aside; get out of the way! I have the power to make choices to obey the Lord. I have the resurrection power to heal the sick, raise the dead, do creative miracles through the power of Holy Spirit inside us. (We have to get close to Jesus to learn how to release Holy Spirit’s power.) I have the power to be bold and courageous when it seems scary. I have power.
He showed me that I have love. I have love to be kind to those who have done wrong to me. I have love to show compassion on those who are hurting or need help. I have love to be gentle to others when I want to play ruff. I have love to be generous to others even when I don’t have a lot. I have love.
What the Lord also showed me through the years is that fear isn’t just a feeling; it is a spirit. We in Christ have the authority to tell that spirit of fear to get out of our atmosphere, out of our life, out of our circumstances, out of our choices. To do this we don’t agree with the feelings of fear; this feeling of fear is not of the Lord, so it is not for us to receive it, or invite it to stay with us. Then we focus on what God did give us; a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. We thank the Lord for what He gave us, and rejoice that fear has no place in our life, circumstances, choices, and so on. We worship the Lord to change the atmosphere around us. We make Jesus bigger in our mind and heart than the spirit of fear because Jesus has already overcome the spirit of fear on the cross for us, so we can choose not to be tormented by fear any more. We receive the work Jesus already did on the cross for us. Amen.
[Side note: When I got older, and looked back at the nightmares I had, I discovered they were not random dreams of terror, but rather they were prophetic or warning dreams. It’s like how one speaker shared; she had a time in her life when monsters were chasing her in her dreams, but when she started speaking scriptures at the monsters, even in her dreams, she was the one chasing the monsters in her dreams, and then the dreams stopped. The Lord used the dreams to teach her how to fight spiritual warfare.
When I began to learn how to interpret dreams, I too saw that the Lord was sharing deep understanding with me at a young age. The dreams usually didn’t scare me as much as I just didn’t understand them, so I would scream because I didn’t know what to do with the information at that time. Sometimes a dream would come to me explaining what kind of spirit is in the atmosphere of the place I’m at. That can be scary at times, especially for a kid. As I got older, and the closer I got to the Lord, I realized looking back on my life I was very sensitive to the spirit realm; however, there wasn’t anyone in my life who could help cultivate what was going on with me.
When I got older, the Lord began putting teachers and speakers into my life to teach me what I had been experiencing my whole life, and how to cultivate it. Later on in another blog I will share about what I’ve learned about dream interpretation, and share some teaching materials that have helped me to grow in understanding about it. Let me know whether Biblical Dream Interpretation would be something you would like to hear more about.]
