“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 (NKJV)
There are times in our life when we face difficult times. We may be going to a new school, meeting family members we’ve never met before, going to a summer camp, facing hard decisions in life, or trying out for a sports team. What we can count on is that the Lord is with us wherever we go. He is by our side. He’s our Friend. We can hold His hand, and not be afraid.
The Lord gives us commands. Do not fear. Do not be dismayed. Be courageous. Be strong. These are commands, not recommendations. When the Lord gives us a command He gives us a way to do that command. Often times it’s to do the opposite of what He tells us not to do, or it’s to understand how we are to pull from Him to get the strength to do what He commands. So in this scripture he says “don’t fear or be dismayed” – disappointed. He says to do the opposite; “be strong and of good courage.” Then He tells us why we can be strong and courageous. He is “with us wherever we go.”
Ah! When we know we are not alone, we can be strong and courageous. When we know the Lord is with us, we can be solid in our courage and strength. We can have a hope for the future, so we will not fear nor be discouraged. We pull our strength from the Lord. He is the One who is fighting our battles. We stay close to Him so we know when to duck and when to step forward.
